The bookstore in Kolkata, and more importantly, the elderly gentleman, reshaped my understanding of literature’s potential to shape societies and bring about positive change.

In essence, Kolkata gifted me with a newfound purpose. While it was just one conversation in a tiny bookstore, its ripples continue to influence my life, proving that the most profound changes sometimes arise from the most unexpected encounters.

On the festival’s final day, a woman, seeing my keen interest, invited me to her home. Her family treated me not as a guest, but as family. The simplicity of their lifestyle, their profound connection to their roots, and their unwavering happiness despite the challenges they faced touched me deeply.

That interaction was a revelation. I realized the importance of community, the joy of shared experiences, and the richness of living a life deeply connected to one’s culture and traditions. The warmth and acceptance I felt were overwhelming and made me reevaluate my life priorities.

In essence, that brief sojourn in Tamilnadu instilled in me a deep appreciation for the intangible riches of life – love, community, and culture. It was a simple yet profound reminder that happiness often lies in the simplest of moments, shared with the people around us.

While the festival itself was a carnival of colors, music, and dance, what truly impacted me was an unexpected encounter at a local Gurudwara, a Sikh place of worship.

Despite facing immense adversities in farming due to unpredictable weather patterns and other challenges, his spirit remained undeterred. Harjeet introduced me to the concept of “Chardi Kala” – relentless optimism and high spirits in face of adversity, a core tenet of Sikhism.

The profound joy and resilience demonstrated by Harjeet despite his trials made me introspect. I began to understand the power of perspective, faith, and community. His resilience, coupled with the sense of shared responsibility I witnessed in the Gurudwara, made me more appreciative of the blessings I had and the strength that can be derived from community and faith.

My short visit to Moga wasn’t just a cultural exploration and a transformative experience. It reinforced the idea that while external circumstances may waver, inner strength and community support can act as unwavering anchors.
