Some of the medical books that belonged to and were used by my paternal grandfather are still stored in our home with great care. This issue reminds me of those books, which I believe are among the oldest items in our house. My grandfather was a doctor with an extensive library of medical and reference books. I was only five years old when he died, and I don’t recall anything about him today. But I’d heard he was a wonderful person and a fantastic doctor. Everyone in our neighbourhood looked up to him. To honour my grandfather’s memory, my father removed one of his used tables, an armchair, a large portrait of him, and some of his books after he died. My grandfather’s medical books, for example, have survived and may be found on a bookshelf in our home. Those books are at least 50 to 60 years old, and we’ve had them for the past 20 years on our bookcases. Our housekeepers occasionally remove such books from the shelf, clean them, and then return them to the shelf. When I was a little schoolboy, I attempted to read a few pages from the books, and I recall that they had a distinct odour. I tried to decipher what the contents in those volumes were about, but except for a few illustrations, I had no idea. They are medical-science terminology, which is why they appeared jargon to my immature mind. These books have been saved in my family as a memento of my grandfather’s life. My grandfather was adored by my father, and he was adored by my grandfather as well. My grandfather’s only tangible possessions were these books. As a result, they serve as a conduit for my grandfather’s memories. Despite the fact that these books have no monetary value, they are irreplaceable to our family and serve as a reminder of our grandfather’s loving memory.
